Top 10 Health Issues Affecting Students at Georgia Tech
Top 10 Health Issues Affecting Students at Georgia Tech (in no particular order):
1. Stress: Most commonly used noun/verb on campus? Probably so. Georgia Tech’s rigorous academics can be quite draining. Time management may be the key to solving this problem.
2. Sleep Deprivation: Georgia Tech students adapt to get by with minimal sleep. Although the recommended eight hours would be nice!
3. Alcohol and Substance Abuse: Like on any college campus, this is a prevalent issue. Students should be responsible and remember the long-term affects of their decisions.
4. Lack of Physical Activity: Classes, homework, and extracurricular take up a lot of time. Try to join a sports team, workout at the CRC, or maybe even just avoid taking the buses to ALL your classes!
5. Depression and Anxiety: Exams, living away from home and other hardships can have a huge effect on emotional health. Visit Health Services or talk to a trusted adult about what’s going on.
6. Unbalanced Diet: Red Bull, vending machine food, and Wingnuts are quick meals….but have you ever heard of the Food Pyramid? To stay fit try eating healthier meals that consist of fruits, vegetables, and properly cooked meat.
7. Sexual Health: Birth control and protection can prevent disease. Remember to visit Health Services with any questions or concerns.
8. Illness: Stress, lack of sleep, and the fact that there are thousands of people on campus can make one more prone to catch a cold or the flu. Check with Health Services to get a flu shot and practice good hygiene.
9. Relationship Conflict: Whether you have a conflict with a roommate, friend, or instructor, this can add unneeded tension. Talk to someone and try to resolve any issues or conflicts reasonably and rationally. Look at things from the other person’s prospective!
10. Campus Crime: Living on an urban campus, crime prevention is a serious concern. Practice safe habits, consider taking self-defense classes, and carrying pepper spray. Contact the Crime Prevention unit of the Georgia Tech Police Department with questions or concerns.
